GHS Boys Take Fifth at SRA Nationals

To conclude the season, our varsity men’s eight raced at the Scholastic Rowing Association National Regatta. Greenwich progressed through three rounds of racing in order to get to the grand finals. Greenwich was the only crew to qualify by way of the repechage. Compared to Greenwich, placed in the 29th spot in the initial seeding, the other crews in the final were seeded 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th. In the final, Greenwich finished fifth, but the crew was able to avenge their first round defeat to Mainland. Overall, Greenwich’s fifth place finish out of 33 crews is our best national finish to date.

State Champs Again!

Greenwich Crew retained the Popiel Cup as boy's varsity eight state champions at the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association Championships on May 20. We also placed second in the boy's novice eight, and took bronze in the girl's varsity eight, boy's second eight. girl's novice eight, and boy's four. Congratualtions to all our rowers on a great season and a third-place finish in the overall team standings!

10/24 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

1st Selectman, Jim Lash, commenced the honorary 'Ribbon Cutting Ceremony' of the Public Access Walkway. Rick and Cindy Kral, GWC owners, were pleased to have so many familiar faces from the community join us in the celebration.

Oyster Farming

GWC is now the new hosting home for oyster farming. Teaming up with Fjord fisheries, baby oysters are placed into upweller tanks until they grow to the appropriate size. It seems that our local river is ideal for the rich algae that can make the crustaceans thrive. The river water is circulated through the upweller system and the oysters are tended to until they're seeded in the local sound waters.

Cris Brown, Varsity Boat Christening

Cris Brown, who originally ushered the rowing program into the middle schools here in 2001, was honored for his contributions to local rowers with the dedication of a new shell for the GHS Girls Varsity Crew team. “We've accomplished quite a bit over the past six years,” said Brown, “In 2001, twenty 8th graders and their parents commuted via I-95 to Norwalk and we managed to row an 8+ successfully...once!” Brown was cheered by some seventy-five rowers who gathered along the Mianus River after their rigorous daily workout. Greenwich Crew now comprises more than 200 hundred rowers in grades six through twelve.
