Greenwich Crew Coaches
 

Michael Wieneke, Greenwich Crew Director Mike graduated from St. Lawrence University in 2007 with a degree in Government and a minor in Economics. While at St. Lawrence, he was a three year member of the varsity crew team. He competed with his team at the Head of the Charles, Head of the Fish, New York State Championships and ECAC Championships, as well as many other smaller regattas. During his senior year Mike was co-captain of the Men’s Crew team and was recognized as the 2007 Athletic Ambassador for his work though out the St. Lawrence community. Mike represented St. Lawrence University and the Liberty League Athletic Conference on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee gaining invaluable experience with college recruiting and the NCAA. Mike joined the Water Club coaching staff in the Fall of 2008 as an assistant coach with the middle school program. In the Spring of 2010 he made the transition into his current full time position as Program Coordinator for Junior Rowing where he was the Head Coach of our middle school and high school programming, also coordinating the annual Greenwich Invitational. 11/24/10 Mike was promoted to Greenwich Crew Director, Mike can be reached via e-mail at mwieneke@greenwichwaterclub.com.

 


Chris Ives, Masters Head Coach. Chris Ives began his rowing career at UMass where he was a member of their varsity crew that won the Dad Vail (1980) and which he captained his senior year. His experience in National Team Training Camps in 1983 and 1984 provided him with invaluable coaching from Kris Kornzinowski and Dietrich Rose, and the opportunity to row with top American rowers. Chris continued as a competitive masters rower over the years, winning gold medals at many major North American and European regattas. Palm Beach RA has been his main club affliation over last 15 years. In 1996 Chris launched indoor rowing classes at the West Side YMCA (NYC) which became the basis for Concept 2's indoor rowing classes in the fitness industry. He worked closely with Larry Gluckman in developing the indoor rowing training program for Concept 2 and in the process ramped up his own training, landing on the podium at the CRASH-B's 3 years in a row with 2 silvers and a bronze in the 40 yr old category. He has coached at Craftsbury Sculling Center, NYU, Sarah Lawrence College, Saugatuck RC, and Brunswick School. In addition, Chris holds a Masters degree from Teachers College (Columbia University) in Counseling and Organizational Psychology, and brings his knowledge of team building and sports psychology to all his coaching.


Anne Walsworth, Program Coordinator for Junior Rowing Anne comes most recently from her post as Director of Rowing for the New York Rowing Association- New York City. Prior to that she spent time coaching for Essex Rowing Club in Methuen, Massachussets and Pacific Rowing Club in the San Francisco Bay area. Through her tenure there Anne coached numerous freshman and novice crews to top finishes in regional competition and capped her career by taking the Women’s Pair to a 5th place finish at Youth Nationals in 2009.
An alumna of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Anne was a fixture in the Women’s First and Second Varsity Four. As a senior Anne was awarded the Schaeffer Sportsmanship Award, given to the graduating senior not rowing in the Varsity 8 who “through her dedication, spirit, and perseverance has been an inspiration to her teammates.”
Anne got her start in the sport as a sophomore in high school when she joined the Lincoln Park Juniors in Chicago, IL. As a Junior rower she was honored as Most Improved and later served as Team Captain. Anne raced with the Varsity 8 for both of her varsity seasons, earning second place honors behind the eventual Youth National Champion each season. Anne graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in May 2007 with a B.A. in English.


Marko Serafimovski - Marko is originally from Serbia and joined Greenwich Crew in the fall of 2008. He is a recent graduate of University of Alabama in Birmingham with a degree in Industrial Distribution/Marketing. Marko started rowing in 1996 and became professional in 2001. While professional,  Marko competed nationally and  worldwide.

In 2001/2002 he was part of Serbian National team competing  at Junior World Rowing Championship in Duisburg, Germany. From 1998 to 2003 Marko won six national titles competing in junior varsity and varsity team of home town Rowing Club Smederevo where he began his rowing career.


Robert Montague - Robert started rowing in 1998 on the Norwalk River. He went on to row at the University of Connecticut and began coaching his old team after graduating in 2000. Robert has also coached at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and most recently at Murray State University in Kentucky. Along the way, he rowed competitively with the Williamsburg Boat Club, Potomac Boat Club, the Murray State University Rowing Club, and the Louisville Rowing Club. This is Robert’s first year at the Greenwich Rowing Club, where he will be in charge of coaching the novice junior men and maintaining the club’s equipment. He is excited to be back on the East Coast and looks forward to training a new crop of rowers.

 

Pierrick Absolonne – Pierrick began his rowing career at the LavalRowing Club(Quebec,Canada) in 1981. During his youth, his boats won gold medals at the QuebecGames, represented their province at the Canada Games, and won multiple gold medals at the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championships. After winning a gold at the Royal Canadian Henley in 1989, Pierrick raced at the 1990 Canadian Speed Order with his rowing partner, Ross Lizee (now president of the Laval Rowing Club), and won gold in the senior lightweight men’s pair. That same year, he rowed at the World Cup in Lucerne and at the English Henley Regatta. Pierrick now enjoys keeping in touch with his rowing buddies and occasionally racing with them as a Master, especially at the Head of the Charles. But mostly, he is passionate about rowing and sharing his love of the sport with his friends at Greenwich Water Club. Pierrick holds a Master of Science in Landscape Design from Columbia University. He is the proud father of two young children and lives with his family in Darien.


Darryl Crawford was introduced to the sport of rowing at Salisbury School in Salisbury CT. Enchanted by the sport of rowing and all that it offered in physical and mental training Darryl rose from third boat varsity to first boat varsity within his first spring season of rowing. During the summer of 1996  Darryl rowed with the Junior National Development Camp Team of Cinncinati, Ohio under the coaching of Todd Jesdale, where Darryl and many other great athletes won 9 gold medals in eights and fours. During high school Darryl received many outstanding oarsman awards, and was voted Crew Captain of the Salisbury Rowing team. As Captain, Darryl believed in leading by example. During the summer of 1997 Darryl Crawford made the Junior Men’s eight earning a silver medal in the Junior World Championships. Darryl is also the first African American to ever row in a Junior World Championship. Darryl went on to continue his rowing career at Brown University, where at one point Crawford had been the only undefeated oarsman in the Brown boat house. Among many impressive wins at Brown, Crawford rowed in the Brown men’s eight that placed 1st among collegiate crews at Head of the Charles. After rowing on the Brown Men’s Crew team, Darryl taught himself how to row in singles, doubles and quads in various clubs throughout the United States. Darryl is a Reiki Master, holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Brown University, and a Masters Degree in Adolescent Education in 7th-12th grade mathematics from Adelphi University. He is US Rowing Level II Coaching certified, and finds great joy in continuing to row and coach.


Claire Schonning began rowing in high school and is currently a collegestudent in New York City. She has raced at regattas all along the east coast ranging from stroking an 8+ in the Head of the Charles to being a coxswain.

Claire began coaching young athletes at the age of 17. In 2008 she created and ran a program,Catch the Drive, to reach out to and give high school girls labeled “at-risk” by their communities the opportunity to row. The following year Catch the Drive was selected by the Woman’s Sports Foundation as one of only 20 women’s outreach programs throughout the country to receive a grant. Claire enjoys having the opportunity to help young athletes find their passion in the sport of rowing.


Victor Ceci - Began rowing for Greenwich Crew as a freshman in 2002. He competed for Greenwich for four years before moving onto Bucknell University, where he studied Mechanical Engineering and rowed for Bucknell Men's Crew. He competed against many Dad Vail, Patriot League, and ACRA schools as both a lightweight and a heavyweight. He also served as a Co-Captain and Captain of the team his Junior and Senior years. He graduated in May 2009 with a BSME, and currently works as a Mechanical Engineer in Stamford and is excited to be returning to rowing as a coach for his hometown team.

 


Dmitri Vlasov - A rowing and sculling coach for more than eight years. Dmitri begansculling and sprint canoeing in his native Ukraine. He trained out of RC Lokomotiv in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine.

He competed nationally and internationally representing his country and his club. Upon his arrival to the US, Dmitri helped start a college crew club and volunteered as an Assistant Coach. He held the

position of Head Rowing Coach at Sarah Lawrence College.

Recently he worked as Head Coach of the Greenwich Academy

crew and is presently a Masters coach for Greenwich Crew.
